Reflection and anticipation
Lake Rhona, from a walk I did a few years ago
I’m not really a New Year’s resolution kind of person. But as one year transitions to the next, I do find myself reflecting on the year that’s been, and taking stock of all the experiences 2021 brought my way, and of course thinking about future challenges and opportunities.
I feel so excited about the experience that I have had in the past six months to launch my consultancy business and embark on a new path. I couldn’t have wished for a better start, and I feel so grateful to everyone who’s support and belief has helped make this a reality.
I particularly want to acknowledge:
My wife Maura and our family for their trust and support and for encouraging me to have a go, despite the crazy times we live in.
Matt Gray at iTrain Australia for his support in developing my business and working out the delivery of my Mental Health First Aid training – as well as the great work we’ve done together to deliver best practice suicide intervention training – A.S.I.S.T.
Neighbourhood Houses Tasmania, and individual Neighbourhood Houses, for their support and for hosting my training courses and other activities.
The support of my mates and colleagues, who are such an important part of my personal support network.
“You’re an absolute piece of gold!! I can’t thank you enough for the support you’ve offered the Centre and the guidance and ear you’ve offered to me.”
The first three months of working for myself were a true whirlwind. It’s only after a few weeks’ break that I have been able to appreciate how much has been achieved in that time, including:
Supporting a state-wide educational organisation to develop their strategic plan (and rising to the challenge of online facilitation!).
Facilitating and drafting a budget submission for a small, state-wide not-for-profit organisation.
Facilitating online discussions for the Australian Men's Health Forum, including the inaugural meeting of the Male Lived Experience of Suicide Network, in partnership with Roses in the Ocean.
“I liked your presentation style as we were encouraged and felt comfortable in relating personal experiences which you then used to question how we would handle these situations. ”
Delivering my first ‘Tools for Shedders’ workshop for the Tasmanian Men's Shed Association.
Facilitating strategic planning work for another small regionally-based not-for-profit.
Delivering eleven MHFA courses.
Delivering Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training to X participants over five courses with Lifeline Tasmania, Open Arms, and iTrain Australia.
I was also privileged to be part of the iLead for Not-for-Profits with the Tasmanian Leaders Program – a great experience which also enabled me to make some wonderful new friends and connections.
“We all felt like we got so much from the training. So far the best facilitator of this training I have experienced.”
Launching my own consultancy business has been such a satisfying and inspiring experience. Thank you again to all my clients, colleagues, supporters, and friends who have helped me to begin this work in such a positive way.
Below are some highlight images, and some more testimonials. I am looking forward to launching online delivery of Mental Health First Aid soon, along with more training aimed at connecting and supporting men.
Here’s to continuing to work together to make 2022 a year of growth, support and strength for our communities.

“It’s been awesome working with you Jonathan. You have been a great support to us here (at the Neighbourhood House). ”
