What are your goals? Don’t tell me now.

Some good friends I met with recently shared a piece of research with me that demonstrated that when we share our goals with people, it reduces the likelihood that we will achieve them. I knew it!

And yes, I really did know it, from personal experience. How many times have I made proud declarations about ‘the thing’ I am going to do this week, only to arrive a week later at the realisation that my goal is yet to be achieved.

I hadn’t consciously made the connection between talking about my goals and not achieving them. Or perhaps I had been persuaded to believe that declaring my goals to other people would provide me with some accountability.

Alas, that doesn’t work. Since receiving that revelation from my mates, I can say that keeping schtum has helped me. I kept the aims I took away from that meeting to myself, and as a result I have made better progress towards reaching them. It feels good – I feel motivated and excited to get on and continue working on my new ideas and plans, but without telling a soul in the world (until it’s done)!
